André Masson
It is a great honour for Domaine de Terre Blanche to host some of the rare sculptural masterpieces of Andre Masson. Masson, born 1896 in Balagny-sur-Oise was a member of the famous surrealist movement in France.
As most of his surrealist companions, Masson had joined the French army in World War I and was gravely wounded both physically and mentally. The trauma of his wartime experiences left a deep impression on him. Masson’s works are kown to be very much stimulating and visually rich compositions. His work in this area influenced numerous other artists, including the American Abstract Expressionists.
Best known as a painter and a writer his contribution to the field of sculpture – partly driven by the influence of Alberto Giacometti - is also notable
