Herbert Brandl
Herbert Brandl was born in Graz, Austria, in 1959. He now lives and works in Vienna.
Brandl studied at the Academy for Decorative and Applied Arts under Herbert Tasquil and Peter Weibel. The intense connection to his Academy would bring him a guest professors chair.
His work is mainly focussed on oil paintings in large formats, usually as diptychs and triptychs. Herbert Brandl's abstract landscapes, still lifes and his female nudes are notable for his dynamically pastose handling of paint.
Brandl’s work was honored in various exhibitions of international standing, including the famous documenta IX in Kassel (1992).
Since the late 1990s, alpine sceneries are one of the major themes Brandl is working on. His expansive paintings showcase the mountain motif as an optical illusion between abstraction and figuration. Explosive colour spaces form the illusion of natural spectacles in the eye of the beholder.
